Rita Joshi Bahuguna, President, All India Mahila Congress Committee, On the increasing cases of atrocities against women in UP What are the main points in the memorandum you submitted to Governor TV Rajsehwar recently? Our memorandum speaks about two main things. Firstly, we are concerned with cases of atrocities against women in the state, which have steadily increased in the past few years. In fact one disturbing finding is that in the last one year alone they have nearly doubled. Also, our findings reveal that nearly 50 per cent of cases of atrocities against women registered with the National Commission for women are from UP. Secondly, both the Human Rights Commission and the State Commission for Women were constituted in UP after a lot of pressure by various women's groups. But they apparently are not doing their job. So we want the governor to look into the statistics on crimes against women for the years '03-'04 and '04-'05, and then note the action taken in each case. He should ensure that these statutory bodies perform their duties.
What according to you could be the reasons for the sharp increase in crimes against women in UP? The reasons are simple. I feel the government is harbouring the mafia. All this is indicative of the general lawlessness in the state. On what grounds have you accused the State Commission for Women of shielding the culprits in the Aashiana rape case? I clearly feel that the chairperson of the SCW has a political and a personal agenda in this case, which is why I suspect the commission of shielding the culprits. In fact there should be a thorough investigation and if the complicity of the SCW members is proved, then cases should also be registered against them.
